New Programme of Cello-Piano Duo
Hilversum (NL), Fri, 3. Oct 2003Together with pianist Caecilia Boschman Xiaojia is practising a new programme featuring Cello Sonatas by Richard Strauss, Vincent d'Indy and the Dutch composer Julius Röntgen whose work enjoys an increasing popularity in the Netherlands.

With her regular accompanist Caecilia Boschman Xiaojia is practising a new programme with the Cello Sonata in D major op. 84 (1924-5) by Vincent d'Indy, the Cello Sonata in F major op. 6 (1883) by Richard Strauss and two pieces by Julius Röntgen, viz. the Sonata for Cello and Piano in A minor op. 41 and the 'Cinq Morceaux'.

Julius Röntgen, born in Germany in 1855 from a Dutch father and a German mother, both accomplished musicians, spent most of his lifetime in Amsterdam, where he became a major factor in Dutch musical life as a pianist, composer and organizer.
His compositions are getting more and more attention nowadays, especially in view of the year 2005, which will be the 150th anniversary of his birth. He was a prolific composer who eschewed modernism and almost exclusively composed in the traditional style of the 'Leipziger Schule'. Which is not to say that he did not have a distinctive style of his own. To put it in the words of his friend Donald Tovey, in his obituary of Röntgen in The Times (September 1932): "Röntgen's compositions ..... all show consummate mastery in every aspect of technique. Even in the most facile there is beauty and wit. Each series of works culminate in something that has the uniqueness of a living masterpiece."
