"In search for the sound of compassion"
Muso's Zen Music - An Interview
Amsterdam, Mon, 9. Feb 2004In 'Kwartaalblad Boeddhisme' of winter 2004 Marlous Lazal gives an account of her interview with Frans Moussault whose CD "Dream Thoughts" appeared last year.

"Muso's music allows you to experience nature without being in the middle of it," writes Marlous Lazal in her interview in 'Kwartaalblad Boeddhisme' of winter 2004. "His solos are an ode to the bass clarinet that one time he slides along heaven with tenuous sounds, to let it roar another time like a storm at sea. His improvisations are so transparent that they invite you to relax, and at the same time force you to listen very intensely because of the extraordinary changes in dynamics."
Already during his study at the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatory Frans Moussault got acquainted with shakuhachi music: the sound of the Japanese bamboo flute fascinated him. He studied for some time in Japan with Nyosho Jin, not so much to study the technique as the whole culture around it. Jin taught him another way of playing and listening.
"In Zen music two things are very important," says Frans, "breath and the consciousness of the sound that you're making at the moment." He draws inspiration from emotions like compassion, power or tenderness, and is often inspired by poetry, especially Eastern poetry.
Another essential element is silence. "My first improvisations were a dialogue with silence. Silence can be very meaningful. Take for instance 'Dragon', a very tense piece in which one experiences silence in a kind of anxious expectation of what the dragon will do in the end."
The reactions from the audience vary. Some people experience relaxation, others get a lot of energy out of it. Frans thinks this allright: "I don't want to influence people, I try not to stand between the listener and the music."
