From genius to lunatic - a tragic history
"Schumann's Diaries" in Music
Amsterdam, Fri, 11. Feb 2005In "Schumann's Diaries" the NBE shows the tragic later years of Robert Schumann who ended up in an asylum. Bart Schneemann tells the story, the NBE illustrates with arrangements by Otto Ketting.

Robert Schumann, the outstanding master who at the very height of his career writes perfect, vigorous, virtuoso and emotionally charged compositions, gets confused. Fantasy takes control of his mind. His pieces become shorter, more dispersive; there is less cohesion, and the composer more and more feels inclined to writing for children. He eventually attempts to take his life and ends up in an asylum.
"Schumann's Diaries" tells a fascinating story based on the composer's diaries and the musical thread running through his piano music.
The arrangements were made by Otto Ketting, composer and Schumann-admirer, and range from the "Fantasiestücke" (1837) to the composer's last works "Kinderball" and "Gesänge der Frühe" (1853).

Previous to the concerts in Tilburg, Enschede, Groningen and Amsterdam pupils from a secondary school will perform a programme made by themselves, inspired by "Schumann's Diaries". For starting times see the agenda.
