A programme about Erik Satie
"Concert Shaped Like a Pear"
Amsterdam, Mon, 14. Nov 2005At the end of November 2005 the NBE will bring a series of 5 concerts with piano works by the famed eccentric Erik Satie arranged by well-known Dutch composers.

A programme about Erik Satie: composer of superficial and profound music, inventor of absurdities, awkward and conceited and completely uncompromising. With his irritating cocksureness he wrote music not exactly fit for normal concert-hall routine. However, though being generally abused and not understood during his lifetime, in the Paris of around 1900 he was the hero of young composers and artists, and also nowadays Satie is still the avant-gardist and gifted musician who influenced whole generations of composers.

Images are an essential feature in his music. He held great attraction for artists like Picasso, Cocteau, Diaghilev, Picabia and René Clair. But he was also a gifted writer who commented upon his own works and those of his fellow-artists and right and wrong of music life in Paris in a witty, absurd and biting way.

‘Concert shaped like a pear’ is a performance in the spirit of Satie and his time, based on the artist’s own texts and commentaries and a selection out of the hundreds of compositions for piano solo that especially reveal the uncompromising eccentric. The NBE asked Micha Hamel, Guus Janssen, Hans Koolmees, Joël Bons, Ron Ford, Vincent van Warmerdam en Maarten Altena to arrange these pieces each in his own way.
