Interview in "China Nu" on Xiaojia's activities as musician and consultant
"Chinese Sunday's Child"
Hilversum (NL), Wed, 11. Jan 2006In 'China Nu' 5 (2005) Guido van Oss presents an interesting profile of Xiaojia as performing musician and consultant.

Some ten times a year Xiaojia Xu performs as a cellist in the Netherlands and Germany. “In Xu’s facial expression, aura and playing one can observe a mix of total relaxation, childlike happiness and hectic looking movement,” writes Guido van Oss in ‘China Nu’ no. 4 (2005). “It all serves a higher goal: an enthousiastic, from time to time breathtaking concert with an incidental humorous moment.”
But apart from being a performer Xiaojia is also active as an advisor and consultant, mainly – but not exclusively – in the cultural sphere. It all started when in 1999 she got an assignment from Radio Netherlands World Service to organize Holland Promotion programmes to be broadcasted in major Chinese cities during the visit of H.M. Queen Beatrix to the People’s Republic. The programmes, completely composed by herself, brought her two Chinese awards.
“Through my family, friends and acquaintances I dispose of an extensive network, which comes in extremely useful,” says Xiaojia. “Moreover you have to develop a sense of how to rightly appeal to different people to eventually reach your goal. That you have to avoid delicate subjects like human rights and freedom of the press is in China inevitable.”
In 2002 she organized semi-live broadcasts of the North Sea Jazz Festival for a potential radio audience of 400 million people. Among her recent activities are exchange programmes for important music ensembles from and to China. Xiaojia very much enjoys the combination of performing musician and consultant. “For each of these you need different qualities, and that is what makes my work highly interesting. I think that contact with people is my forte.”
