Project in cooperation with Musiciand without Borders
NBE Played in Destroyed Sarajevo Library
Amsterdam, Tue, 11. Jul 2006In the first two weeks of July the NBE was in Sarajevo to give concerts and masterclasses, as part of a project to support the musical education at the city's conservatory.

During the weekend of 8/9 July 2006 the NBE gave two concerts in Sarajevo, one of which took place at the National Library. Pictures of this historical building that accommodated the age-long literary history of Bosnia and Herzegovina went all over the world when it was shot into flames more than ten years ago during the siege of Sarajevo. The second concert was an open-air concert similar to the famous NBE New Year's Concerts at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Concerts form part of a project of 'Musicians Without Borders' and the NBE to help to strengthen the musical education at the conservatories of Sarajevo and Banja Luka.

In the first two weeks of July 2006 the NBE moreover gave masterclasses, workshops and concerts during Sarajevo's Summerfestival, Bascarsijske Noci. The NBE performed Mozart's Gran Partita, and there was also an open-air concert with Bosnian Conservatory students.

Together with Musicians without Borders, the organisation that uses the power of music to contribute to building peaceful societies, operating especially in conflict areas, the NBE helps the Conservatory of Sarajevo to strengthen and expanding the Academy's wind department. Other musical institutes in Bosnia and Herzegovina and students from different ethnic backgrounds will be drawn into the project

At the beginning of October 2005 musicians of the NBE were for the first time in Sarajevo to discuss the plans and give lessons. After that three more times a group of NBE members were in Bosnia where they coached teachers, gave masterclasses and introduced new repertoire. Students that took part in these sessions participated in the open-air concert given during the Summerfestival.
