Four young composers and several asylum seekers on stage with the NBE
Paradise - New Year's Concert 2007
Amsterdam, Thu, 7. Dec 2006On 1 January 2007 the traditional NBE New Year's Concert will take place at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw under the title of 'Paradise'.

How do you imagine Paradise? Always nice weather, no one hungry, no war and everybody healthy? Nice people everywhere, strange birds, beautiful music, or everything peaceful and silent, with waving trees and lazy rivers? Or is Paradise nonsense, a sop, a mere eyewash? Does Paradise exist somewhere on earth?

On 1 January 2007 the Amsterdam Concertgebouw will be transformed into a piece of paradise. For the audience, the Blazers Ensemble, the young composers, the televiewers and especially also for the guest musicians who, like the guest soloists last year, as fugitives have sought paradise in The Netherlands.

January 1st is the day of good intentions, of promise and the best wishes for everybody. For a short moment the world is one then. Music is not hindered by boundaries and speaks an universal language. The guest soloists come from Ethiopia, Burundi, Nigeria and Iraq. Some are allowed to stay here, others are not. That story is still not finished.

More than hundred children and youngsters have entered the competition 'Setting out for the 2007 New Year's Concert', for the first time also children from Dutch-speaking Belgium. They wrote, played and sung about their own Paradise, about what your feelings are when you are there and who belong there and who not. After the preliminaries all over the country and the grand Finale at Music Centre Vredenburg, on January 1st four young talents will stand on the platform of the Concertgebouw.

Dress-rehearsel on 31 December 2006 at 15.00 h. Tickets 18, children under 16 8.
New Year's Concert on 1 January 2007 at 13.15 h. Tickets 27, children under 16 15.
Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, 020-6718345.
Broadcast by TV on 1 January 2007 at 20.20 h (Nederland 2), live at 13.15 h on Radio 4 and, where also the compositions entered can be listened to.

This year, too, the NBE cooperates with ' De Vrolijkheid', the Foundation that devotes itself to children and youngsters in asylum seekers' centres. Musicians, artists and theatre people help the children to momentarily flee in making music, painting and dancing. On 1 January a new campaign is started by De Vrolijkheid under the title of 'Let them mess about'.

The New Year's Concert has been made possible by contributions of Buma Cultuur, the CoBO-Fonds, Stimuleringsfonds Culturele Omroepproducties and the ThuisKopieFonds.
