Promoting music from the Netherlands in the People's Republic
Xiaojia's latest "Radio Tour" in China
Hilversum, Mon, 20. May 2002Xiaojia Xu has organized new "Dutch Music Weeks On The Air", special theme weeks around music and musicians from The Netherlands are presented, on three of China's most popular radio stations.

Xiaojia's second career, apart from performing as a cellist, is her job for Radio Netherlands International since 1998. Her task is to introduce music and musicians from the Netherlands in the Chinese media. RN's partner stations have been regularly broadcasting content from Radio Netherlands since then, but the most spectacular events have been the "Dutch Music Weeks On The Air", when they broadcast music from the Netherlands for up to 15 days, several hours a day on all channels.

China National Radio was the first to broadcast such a "Dutch Music Week" in 1999 during the visit of HM Queen Beatrix from the Netherlands. For tens of millions of Chinese, it was the first acquaintance with the Netherlands and its culture beyond dikes and tulips. Jazz, pop and classical music from Dutch soil was broadcasted nationwide in China, along with documentaries about the Netherlands cultural and historical background.

This moth, the formula was repeated on Radio Zhejiang (the province where most of the tea and silk originate from) and Radio Shenzhen (a brand new metropolis near Hong Kong); Radio Chengdu (capital of Sichuan) will follow in September.
