Workshop bij het Leerorkest
Amsterdam, Tue, 3.

Romantic film made and played by Quirijn van Regteren Altena and Janica Draisma
'Romance with Double Bass'
Amsterdam, Thu, 22. Oct 2009On 30 September 2009 the film 'Romance with Double Bass' made by Quirijn van Regteren Altena and director Janica Draisma was screened during the Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht.

'Romance with Double Bass' is a film by bassist Quirijn van Regteren Altena and director-actress Janica Draisma, presented during the Dutch Film Festival 2009 in Utrecht.
It is based on a short story by Anton Chekhov in which musician Smytchkov, on his way to the country house of prince Bibulov, by coincidence meets princess Bibulova. While they are bathing in the river, their clothes are stolen. Smytchkov finds a solution for the problem: He takes the double bass he carried with him out of its leather case and hides the princess in it. He waits until dark and then sets out for the house of the princess ...........
The music that accompanied the film was performed live by an ensemble conducted by Quirijn van Regteren Altena who also played the bassist in the film. Director Janica Draisma played the princess, but on the stage, too, her role came to life in a short dance.

'Playing on a Gran Turismo'
Amsterdam, Sun, 6. Sep 2009In an interview in HP/De Tijd of 27 April 2007 bassist Quirijn van Regteren Altena tells proudly of his instruments.

Bassist Quirijn van Regteren Altena is very proud of the instruments he and his wife possess. In an interview in HP/De Tijd of April 27, 2007 he declared to critic Oswin Schneeweisz:
"On the subject of instruments, I always had the feeling that I live above my station. My wife and I own no less than five basses, the oldest and undoubtedly the most beautiful one being the 'Tarisio' by Gasparo da Salo. The instrument goes all the way back to 1560, which is even before the period of Stradivarius and Guarneri. But it is still in perfect condition.
During the time that it was used in Christopher Hogwood's Academy of Ancient Music the Tarisio was nicknamed 'the Gran Turismo'.
Equipped as it is with gut strings it is not fit for modern music as I use to play with the Schönberg Ensemble. For that repertoire I use another great instrument, a Grancino dating from 1720, made in Milano in a totally different manner. But it sounds incredibly fine."

"Exciting Interpretations"
Amsterdam, Thu, 20. Nov 2003In the newspaper 'Trouw' of November 8th 2003 critic Kees Arntzen is full of praise for the intelligent choice of the programme, the exciting interpretations and the well-balanced recording of the new CD 'Pantomime'.

"To say much with little material, that is Gubaidoelina's strength in the two compositions by her on this disk," writes critic Kees Arntzen in 'Trouw' of November 8th 2003. "Double bass player Quirijn van Regteren Altena and pianist Peter Beijersbergen van Henegouwen are clearly carried away by that silent strength, as appears from their exciting interpretation.
In Honegger's Prélude the double bass player can make heard that his instrument is not inferior to a cello in eloquence. [.....] The two compositions by Dutch composers Werkman and Van Oosten are pleasant music and are recorded with a nice balance between the double bass and the piano. [.....]
By the intelligent choice of the compositions this is first of all a CD to listen attentively to."
